A surgical practice asks a great deal of the people around you before it asks anything of a patient. This essay is about what my family gave up — quietly, for years — so that a hospital in Beirut could exist at all.

Paris offered a career. Beirut asked for a commitment. Returning in 2006 to found the first MOH-licensed plastic-surgery hospital in the country was not the safer choice — it was the one that felt like the only honest one.
